Fracture toughness is the ability of a material to resist crack propagation.

It is tested by creating a flaw in a material and then stressing that flaw to evaluate how the material resists breaking. Fracture toughness has high clinical relevance as it is testing an inherent attribute of a material and is not subject to treatment variables such as grinding or polishing.
